#OnlySheCan: 80 per cent FIRs under 498a are false cases #SCRAP498A

According to the National Crime Records Bureau, the cases of "torture" on women under Section 498A increased by 11.6 per cent (1,18,866) in 2013 over the previous year (1,06,527 cases). Bengal had the most cases - 18,116, followed by Rajasthan that reported 15,094, and Andhra Pradesh that recorded 15,084 cases.


A total of 1,97,762 people were arrested across India in 2012 for offences under Section 498A - 9.4 per cent more than that in 2011.

Data available with the ministry reveals that over 80 per cent cases under 498A fell through in court, resulting in acquittals.
